Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Duties Description This position is based in DEC’s Central Office in Albany and will work with the State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) coordinator on the 2025 revision of New York’s SWAP. Work will be office based and involve assisting the SWAP coordinator with: formatting and editing species status assessments and other information used to revise the existing SWAP; incorporating northeast regional data into a statewide document; reviewing, organizing and evaluating public comments for information relevant to the SWAP and Species of Greatest Conservation Need; researching and interpreting recent scientific publications and other data sources on Species of Greatest Conservation Need to fill in data gaps and update citations in species status assessments; and supporting outreach efforts. The preferred candidate will have excellent communication, reading, writing, and organizational skills, with attention to detail and proficient ability for consistently formatting and editing documents. Experience using Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel, Word and Outlook) is required, and familiarity with Sharepoint preferred. Experience with using ArcMap GIS, and knowledge and understanding of New York’s Species of Greatest Conservation Need and their habitats is also preferred.As part of the Wildlife Diversity Section, the incumbent may also be required to assist Wildlife staff involved in the implementation of other programs or tasks as assigned. Potential work may include monitoring of at-risk invertebrate species, surveys for reptile and amphibian species, data entry, or maintaining field equipment.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 9/30/2024.
