What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated Database Engineer to support enterprise or direct mission data solutions that are used by both custom and commercial software applications.

On any given day you may be called on to:

  • Use and/or develop solutions that encompass DBMS infrastructure, database structure; security; performance tuning; back-up and recovery; disaster recovery; integration; conversion; change management, and data warehousing

  • Support daily operations and functioning of database systems which includes implementing and maintaining software, tools, and processes

  • Partner in a managed team environment to resolve day-to-day database issues which involve a variety of customers and developers and requires effective collaboration

  • Work with infrastructure partners in the delivery of our services such as network, middleware and system administrators

  • Support continuous improvement and gain efficiencies

  • Participate in a 7x24 on-call rotation required every 7-10 weeks

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or an IT related field; or equivalent (Associate’s degree + 4 years or no degree + 8 years)

  • Experience with data engineering with one or more DBMS platforms including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle , MySQL, or MongoDB

  • Experience writing and using SQL with modern DBMS systems

  • An active DOE L clearance, or equivalent is required to start

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Database Administration proficiency with one or more of the following RDBMS platforms: SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, or MongoDB.

  • Experience with:

  • Database administration tools used for data management and design (such as SQL Developer, OEM, DBArtisan, ERStudio, etc.)

  • Integration of BI, Reporting, and Analytic tools with DBMS platforms

  • Tools for job scheduling like BMC’s Enterprise Control Scheduling

  • Supporting large data warehouses

  • Data transformation and integration

  • COTS software packages, and in particular large COTS applications like Oracle ERP, Maximo, Peoplesoft, etc.

  • Ability to:

  • Plan and install database software and database systems

  • Develop tools, utilities, and procedures to automate maintenance functions

  • Develop database stored procedures and triggers

  • Define and develop tests for verification and validation of database solutions and installations

  • Understand and work with new and emerging database technologies including Cloud solutions, DataOps, Big Data, and Data Virtualization

  • Knowledge of:

  • Database performance tuning techniques and tools, with ability to debug and tune SQL.

  • Database backup and recovery techniques and tools

  • Hardware and operating systems (Linux and Windows) including scripting, file management, and server security

  • Database modeling including both logical and physical design and referential integrity concepts

  • Software development methodologies, tools, and processes

  • Database security principles, implementation, and management

  • Successful teaming and communication skills including documentation abilities

  • Willingness to participate in polygraph testing for SIGMA15 access

About Our Team:

We provide production strength stewardship of Sandia’s structured and semi-structured data assets. Our services include Administration of 4 industry leading DBMS platforms (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, and Mongodb), as well as Data Architecture and Integration services including modeling, design, migration, conversion, replication/integration and warehousing of data. We are a true Enterprise Service supporting 900+ projects and 1300+ developers across the Lab. We do this with a team of exceptional staff organized in platform support teams that are structured to provide depth and better availability of resources, while promoting collaboration and continued growth through active training and mentoring.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

Salary Range:

$81,900 - $157,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
