Adolfson & Peterson Construction, one of the nation’s top contractors, is recruiting for an experienced Regional Controller for our Mountain States region based out of Aurora.

Because safety is paramount to AP and embedded into everything we do, all team members are responsible for working safely within our Incident and Injury Free culture.

Position Summary

This is a regional leadership role responsible for the accounting and finance functions within the region including budgeting, forecasting, subcontractor payments and relations, and surety relationships. Holds matrix reporting relationship to the Chief Financial Officer, ensuring the integrity of underlying regional financial information.

Primary Accountabilities

  1. Take personal responsibility for working safely within an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture.
  • Be a champion to support IIF efforts for working safely and building a culture of care and concern within the organization that reinforces the behavioral aspects of working and living safely.

  • Maintain a relationship with safety to hold responsibility for personal safety, the safety of each person in the company, and the IIF performance of the entire workforce.

  • As a leader, consistently communicate and reinforce the tenets of an IIF workplace. Be willing to discuss a personal commitment and desire for all team members to work safely and attain an IIF workplace.

  • As a leader, ensure that processes and procedures that support an IIF culture are maintained and reviewed for continuous improvement.

    1. Lead financial operations for the region and ensure compliance with company expectations, processes, and controls.
  • Hire, develop, and retain a best in class accounting department.

  • Develop an annual budget and prepare performance reports and variance communications.

  • Oversee the processing of receivables and payables. Follow up on past due receivables and assist in settling disputes.

  • Provide financial audits, project forecasting, and analyses.

  • Prepare and/or review month-end journal entries and bank reconciliations.

  • Coordinate investment (escrowed) retainage accounts with AP accounting expectations.

  • Collaborate with project teams to maximize the profit potential on all work performed by AP. Assist in reviewing and negotiating owner contract terms and conditions.

  • Critically evaluate the risk associated with the pursuit of new work and provide feedback to leadership on how to mitigate the risks.

    1. Manage project billings, forecasts, job cost tracking, and cash flow management analyses.
  • Build, update, and communicate budgets and financial forecasts with the appropriate level of detail.

  • Oversee review of job cost summaries and profit projections to ensure financial integrity; evaluate and compare earned revenue and billings; validate final contract values.

  • Monitor project budget set-ups for compliance and completely capture costs.

  • Prepare project financials; assist project managers and superintendents to create an understanding of financials.

    1. Act as regional liaison to the company’s sureties and risk management resources and processes.
  • Maintain the region’s relationship with sureties and ensure compliance with conditions of performance bonds.

  • Ensure that builder’s risk insurance costs are reviewed, managed, and reconciled to projects as appropriate.

  • Review subguard policy applications for accuracy in values and timing.

  • Manage the claims administration process for internal and external losses with company external counsel and consultants. Resolve claims against bond or mechanics liens against projects.

    1. Manage the operational regional tax exposures and compliance with state regulatory agencies.
  • Understand, monitor, and resolve changes in local and regional tax laws including sales and use tax, gas tax, property tax, and corporate income taxes.

  • Ensure that local and regional tax deposits and related reports for state and local entities are made as required by law.

  • Maintain business or contracting licensing forms and returns with state and city governments or agencies.

    1. Review and manage subcontractor and vendor payments and performance.
  • Negotiate master subcontract agreements. Review and analyze the terms and language of owner and subcontractor contracts for consistency with company expectations; partner with the regional leadership team to recommend and/or manage variances to standard language as business warrants.

  • Establish and conduct the subcontractor prequalification process. Communicate to the regional project management team any issues with subcontractor risk.

  • Oversee subcontractor payments and pay discounts. Assist in the resolution of disputes.

  • Monitor subcontractor joint check agreements, tax levies, and bankruptcy notices.

      Qualifications

    2. History of progressively more responsible leadership experience and proven results including:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration/finance, or related field and 8+ years of progressive accounting experience. Construction accounting and CPA certification preferred. Experience and familiarity with the A/E/C industry preferred.

  • Demonstrated financial acumen, including experience creating financial analyses for business decision support.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word and Excel. Familiarity with construction accounting software preferred.

  • General understanding of legal contract documentation and compliance.

    2. Experience in a complex business as an active participant in driving growth and change; demonstrated effectiveness in driving operations and executing plans.

    3. Ability to identify talent, create and develop teams, and build trust and engagement.

    4. Capability to identify and capitalize on opportunities quickly; ability to maintain effective balance between strategic and tactical priorities.

    5. Experience in driving accountability for financial and operational effectiveness, integrating and aligning efforts within teams, monitoring results, and tackling problems directly.

    6. Experience cultivating an active network of relationships, driving collaboration and alignment, relating well to key colleagues, and connecting with employees at all levels.

    7. Ability to drive to the core of complex issues and provide insightful and constructive feedback.

    The pay range for this position is $109,000-$144,000 plus bonus and vehicle benefit.
