This position is responsible for the leadership and direction of sales, production and strategic growth of Heidelberg Materials’ operations in East and Central Pennsylvania as well as New Jersey. In this capacity, the incumbent will set strategic and tactical goals and manage the achievement of business profitability through operational efficiency and marketing strategies for our aggregates, hot-mix asphalt, and recycle businesses. This complex management unit consists of approx. 19 aggregate operations, 4 HMA locations and 2 recycle operations. This position will report to the Sr. Vice President and General Manager, Northeast Materials Subregion.

What you will get to do:

  • Champion a culture of safety excellence leading to safe performance and compliance

  • Provide vision, direction, and strategies necessary to lead the business.

  • Ensure business goals and objectives are in line with the overall business strategy of the Northeast Region and Heidelberg Materials organization, both short and long-term. Develop, implement, and measure performance results on a regular basis and take corrective action as required.

  • Develop overall production plans and area budgets. Provide direction to management and oversee progress to ensure that plans are met while being prudent in cost and inventory management.

  • Lead, guide and develop the management team toward achieving business goals, growing profitability and expanding customer base

  • Maintain awareness of market conditions and the impact on the business, adjusting strategies and tactics as needed to achieve results. In conjunction with operations personnel, maintain or enhance communication with customers, suppliers, etc. to ensure the necessary components are in place to provide superior customer service and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

  • Identify acquisition and merger opportunities and provide project management of internal and external resources to grow our organization’s footprint.

  • Oversee capital budgets, operating budgets and operating costs. Responsible for reviewing and approval of all capital expenditures.

  • Participate in systems analysis and embrace value-add technology to identify areas for cost reductions and improved customer experience.

  • Work closely with central support functions teams to identify continuous improvement opportunities and implement cost savings measures where appropriate.

  • Direct the sales activities and marketing strategies. Build direct relationships with key customers. Participate in industry and community organizations to facilitate the recognition and reputation of the company. Ensure coordination between sales and operations for optimal coordination.

  • Support and drive digitalization and sustainability initiatives.

  • Identify acquisition and merger opportunities and provide project management of internal and external resources to grow our organization’s footprint.

  • Ensure talent management and acquisition strategies are in place to provide optimal staffing and performance for the business unit and company.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations/permits and Group guidelines in area of responsibility.

Who we are looking for:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the construction industry; experience in multiple product lines preferable including aggregates and hot-mix asphalt.

  • 7-10 years’ experience in progressively responsible positions in sales, operations or engineering ; demonstrated safety record

  • Prior leadership experience is required, experience in a union environment is desirable

  • Must have a solid understanding of both operations and sales functions.

  • Bachelor’s degree required. MBA preferred

  • In depth understanding of the financial aspects of a business, including P&L statements, EVA, and budgets including understanding of the justification process for projects.

  • Significant market pricing knowledge and cost awareness

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization and cross functional departments

  • Demonstrated negotiation skills

  • Solid computer skills, including MS Office Suite of products

  • Strong leadership skills and ability to motivate others to achieve results

  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions based on sound business reasoning

  • Ability to manage changing situations effective

Work Environment:

  • Role operates primarily in in an office setting but will also operate in a manufacturing environment with moving mechanical equipment, inclement weather, heat, humidity, elevated noise levels, and dusty conditions as dictated by project requirements.

  • Must be able to occasionally climb stairs, walk on uneven surfaces and enter confined spaces.
