MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR MECHANIC DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The duties of the position involve responsibility for safe and efficient operation and repair of a variety of road building and construction equipment including front-end loaders, bulldozers, road sanders, and four-wheel drive snowplows. The incumbent is required to perform manual duties as assigned when not operating equipment. In addition to performing routine maintenance including lubrication and maintenance of equipment fluid levels, an incumbent does skilled mechanical work on motor equipment. This position differs from that of Automotive Mechanic in that an incumbent is not qualified to perform complete engine and equipment system overhauls. The work is performed under general supervision with leeway allowed for use of independent judgment in carrying out details of the work. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Laborers assigned to the equipment in operation. The incumbent does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Operates a variety of road construction and maintenance equipment such as, but not limited to, front-end loaders, bulldozers, road sanders, snowplows, backhoes, and rollers; Performs skilled operations in the repair of motor equipment including but not limited to installing new clutches, repairing electrical wiring, and repairing brakes; Performs preventative maintenance on motor equipment; May perform a variety of manual tasks such as cutting trees, road patching, bridge scraping and painting, and snow shoveling when not operating or repairing equipment; Performs manual tasks related to motor equipment operation such as pumping gas or loading and unloading the vehicle; Greases vehicles and changes oil and oil filters; Attaches and removes snowplow blades and other auxiliary equipment; Transports heavy equipment to construction jobs; If employed at the Plattsburgh International Airport, assists and is a member of the Airport Crash-Fire Rescue Team and operates a variety of crash/fire/rescue equipment in response to aircraft emergencies. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the operation of a variety of public works and construction equipment; Good knowledge of motor equipment repair methods and the terminology and tools of the trade; Good knowledge of county geography; Ability to make skilled repairs to a variety of motor equipment; Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Mechanical aptitude; Willingness to respond to emergencies and work under adverse weather conditions. INIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One (1) year of experience in the operation of road building, maintenance, and/or construction equipment and one (1) year of experience in performing motor equipment repair and maintenance. Motor Equipment Operator Mechanic NOTE: Training in auto/motor equipment repair may be credited for up to one (1) year of the required experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility for an appropriate level New York State Driver's license at the time of application; possession of license at time of appointment.
