POSITION SUMMARY

Inspects, maintains, and repairs rail vehicles.

Qualifications

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Inspects and repairs various components of rail vehicles, such as parking and emergency brakes; inverter, converter, and motor generator, electrical systems, acceleration, and braking control system, auxiliary system, ventilation heating, and air conditioning.

  • Tests and determines cause of malfunction of rail vehicle components, using knowledge, instruments, and gauges.

  • Removes and replaces various components of rail vehicles.

  • Adjusts and repairs various components of rail vehicles.

  • Occasionally performs the duties of Car Servicer.

  • Prepares written reports as necessary.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Required to submit to and pass drug and alcohol testing as mandated by the Federal Transportation Administration.

  • Must sign and adhere to requirements of Rail Excel Program as specified in the New Car Repairer Understanding.

  • Must perform the physical activities associated with this position and pass a physical examination.

  • Required to possess two (2) years of verifiable experience in electro-mechanical work, or a combination of related work experience and accredited technical training such as high school, trade school or college courses, or applicable military experience.

  • Must include the maintenance of electronic, electro-mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic components.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have strength for standing when inspecting and performing repair work, greasing cars, walking through the yards, retrieving parts from storeroom performing safety checks, sitting to perform certain repair work, lifting for brake assembly, calipers, and other parts weighing up to 100 lbs, carrying parts, tools, grease guns, pushing jacks, tool carts and trucks, and pulling wheel assembly, jacks hoses, and grease nozzles.

  • Must be able to climb pit stairs, ladders to enter trains, and balance brake caliber, end sill, while walking over third rail and changing windows.

  • Must be able to stoop when maneuvering under trains, kneel when making repairs on cars in the yard, crouch and crawl when checking lower body parts of the train.

  • Must be able to reach to retrieve parts, changing parts, handle parts, tools, equipment, finger certain components, stating bolts, and feel when checking for imperfections, surface ware, proper fit of bolts, and screws.

  • Must be able to talk when communicating work procedures and instructions and hear verbal instructions, announcements, alarms, and moving trains.

  • Must be able to see near while troubleshooting, inspecting, and repairing, far for dangerous situations in the work area and have color vision to see changing lights on trains, danger flashing lights, and color coded wires.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Must possess a working knowledge of the operation, repair, testing, and adjustment of air conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems.

  • Must possess a working knowledge of pertinent electrical maintenance principles and theories.

  • Required to be knowledgeable of the proper use of hand and power operated tools.

  • Required to be knowledgeable of the operation and use of pertinent gauges, meters, and test equipment.

  • Required to communicate effectively in written and oral form.

  • Must possess a suitable temperament to maintain amiable relations with various levels of Authority personnel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is done primarily outside but some work inside.

  • Exposed to extreme cold, seasonal when working on rail cars outside.

  • Exposed to extreme heat when no temperature controls inside workday.

  • Exposed to wet and/or humid from water in pits, ice, and snow on rail cars.

  • Exposed to noise and vibration from airguns, sirens, spinning rail cars, motor blowers, and power tools.

  • Exposed to mechanical hazards such as pneumatic tools, moving parts on trains, electrical hazards when working near third rail 600 volts, stingers, burn hazard from propane torch, chemical hazard from lubricants, spray cans, cleaning solvents, and heights when standing on end sills, replacing train windows, and pit stairs.

  • Exposed to atmospheric conditions such as fumes from burning rubber, motor oil, odors from cleaning solvents, carbon brush, mist from aerosol spray cans, and gases from refrigerants 22.
