Jacobs is seeking a Transportation Planner to be embedded with a dynamic team within the Division of Project Development at the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT). The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the development and implementation of rules and regulations related to public way policy. The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing public way use permits, conducting comprehensive evaluations of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) studies, and plans for private development. Additionally tracking, evaluating, and conducting surveys of developments who have subject to TDM requirements.

The successful candidate must be self-sufficient, organized, and have the ability to communicate concepts clearly and concisely through writing and graphical representation. The candidate will report to the offices of the City of Chicago Department of Transportation and is anticipated to be full-time hybrid in-person and WFH. Evening and/or weekend hours may be required to support public engagement events.

When you join us as a Transportation Planner, you’ll perform a variety of tasks related to transportation planning projects and studies and associated needs, including but not necessarily limited to:

  • Policy Development: Collaborate with stakeholders to develop and refine rules and regulations pertaining to public way policy, ensuring alignment with local, state, and federal guidelines.

  • Permit Review: Evaluate and process public way use permits, assessing compliance with established policies and recommending modifications or approvals based on thorough analysis.

  • TDM Study Review: Conduct in-depth reviews of Transportation Demand Management studies and plans for private development, providing insights and recommendations to optimize traffic and transportation strategies.

  • Tracking and Surveying: Establish and maintain systems for ongoing tracking and surveying of developments subject to TDM requirements, monitoring their adherence to established policies.

  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Engage with developers, government agencies, and community stakeholders to foster collaboration and address concerns related to public way policy and TDM.

Here’s what you’ll need :

  • Master’s degree in urban planning, transportation engineering, or equivalent degree

  • 2-3 years of proven experience in transportation planning preferably related to the development and implementation of public way policies and/or TDM strategies

  • Command of transportation and urban planning concepts

  • Command of technical analysis skills needed to support transportation decision-making

  • Proficiency in GIS and analysis add-ons, such as Network Analyst and Spatial Analyst

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
