Job Description

The office of Michigan’s Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS) has a focused mission of providing statewide public safety communications for more than2075 state, local, federal, tribal and private public safety agencies. Through our employees, MPSCS handles the second-largest trunked communication system in the world with291 tower sites, 90state and local public safety dispatch centers with490radio dispatch consoles and82Computer Aided Dispatch consoles,117,716radios and7,046 fire pagers. The MPSCS Network Communication Center(NCC) monitors systems operations 24 hours a day to ensure the system is ready to assist Michigan’s first responders.

The function of any public safety communications system is to assure the rapid response and cooperation of emergency personnel. The MPSCS achieves this through reliable, easy-to-use statewide coverage and advanced technology. The ability to share information on demand and in real time, whether it is voice or data, is critical to public safety in Michigan.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is a first-line supervisor with responsibility for directing and coordinating activities of skilled journeymen Tower Technicians on the Metro SE Tower & Site Services and the Capital Region. The team and the Supervisor installs, repairs, and provides maintenance of approximately 80 towers, tower sites, and equipment located at communications sites in the Michigan Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS).

This position ensures proper installation for new site equipment, verification of asset management records and inventory for site equipment. Certifies standards and procedures are followed plus training for various sub systems for the Metro and Capital regions.

Another responsibility of this position is identifying and evaluating workplace hazards which includes identifying unsafe and/or unhealthy conditions and implementing proper work practices to correct issues in a timely manner.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to organize, evaluate, and present information effectively. Computer database and spreadsheet experience. Knowledge and experience in the Steeplejack trade pertaining to state-of-the-art site equipment and test equipment.

Ability to Supervise staff with uncommon tasks, and schedule work in a way not to affect the operation of the MPSCS.

Advanced troubleshooting and repair skills that demand thorough knowledge of HVAC theories and equipment and thorough knowledge of electronic principles, theory, and equipment.

Candidates selected for this position must complete the Michigan State Police background check. This extensive background check requires fingerprinting for state and federal criminal background records. The background search will include, but is not limited to arrests, criminal charges, criminal convictions, and any information regarding contact with a criminal justice agency.

Education typically acquired through completion of high school.

Two years of experience equivalent to a Carpenter E9, Electrician E9, Locksmith E9, Machinist E9, Maintenance Mechanic E9, Mason-Plasterer E9, Painter E9, Plumber E9, Refrigeration Mechanic E9, Welder E9, Steeplejack E9; or, one year equivalent to a Carpenter 10, Electrician 10, Locksmith 10,

Machinist 10, Maintenance Mechanic 10, Mason-Plasterer 10, Painter 10, Plumber 10, Refrigeration Mechanic 10, Welder 10 or Steeplejack 10.

Paid Parental Leave:Eligible employees can take12 weeks of paid leaveimmediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.
