Naval Facilities Engineering Command WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR in Gulfport, Mississippi

Responsibilities You will operate, clean, and maintain water pumping/treating equipment to purify and supply potable water for domestic and industrial use. You will accomplish such water treatment processes as filtration, fluoridation, chlorination, demineralization and ammonization. You will operate a variety of automatic or manually controlled pumps and related equipment by adjusting valves to control rates of feed/various chemicals as well as water flow. You will collect water samples for monthly water quality compliance testing, as well as for other testing purposes. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Water Treatment Plant Operator WG-5409-09 without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by 1) Using non-filtration processes to change the taste, odor, or chemical content of water in a water treatment plant; 2) Performing water treatment tests to check items such as pH level, turbidity, and fluoride and chloride content; 3) Performing repairs such as repacking valves and replacing vales and basic gauges; and 4) maintaining swimming pool water and chlorination levels. Education Additional Information This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. A 40 hour work week is typical for this position. Several vacancies may be filled. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any of the scheduled appointments. Physical Effort Frequently handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and carries objects weighing more than 50 pounds usually with assistance. Moderate effort required to turn valves and controls. Considerable driving to and from various locations to check equipment both on and off the installation. Occasionally climbs ladders and stairs. Working Conditions Works 50%% of the time indoors and 50% outdoors, often in inclement weather. Exposed to noise, rotating machinery, dirt, grease, chemical, oils and fumes. Subject to cuts, bruises, broken bones, electrical shocks, and burns. Follows safe work practices using provided safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, steel toed shoes, hearing and eye protection. Incumbent will be required to be fit tested for full face respirator. * This is an essential position during emergency situations. Incumbent will be assigned to a Disaster Response Team and may be required to be on-board in a working status before, during and immediately following any natural or man-made disaster. The incumbent will remain on board until relieved by the Public Works Shop or the Shop Supervisor.
