The Clerks of the Courts Department is actively seeking a Trial Clerk I

This is administrative support work performing a variety of clerical duties in a court of law. Typical cases involve delinquency or dependency cases (such as traffic citations, juvenile misdemeanor and felonies, delinquent restitution audits and hearings, drug court, civil trials and detention hearing), domestic violence, unified family court cases and county civil (small claims). The work requires a knowledge of clerical practices and procedures used in a court of law which is learned on the job or through related experience. Trains, assigns, monitors and reviews the work of new employees. Contacts require courtesy, tact and effectiveness in dealing with others while providing interpretive or advisory information, requesting information or obtaining clarification. The work is semi-routine and involves similar situations requiring choice of correct procedure. The work is performed in courtroom and office environments, with some exposure to hazardous materials and unpleasant odors, but they are known, predictable and controllable. Work schedule will include working some overtime and weekends. Operates standard office equipment including personal computers. The physical demands are not constant, however, may routinely sit for extended periods without a break and move case file boxes and court evidence weighing up to 25 pounds. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and, although subject to standard practices and procedures, the worker is permitted some latitude to set own priorities subject to supervisor approval.

  • Prepares docket or calendar of cases and distributes according to distribution schedule.

  • Prepares case records and files for court proceedings.

  • Prepares and distribute forms detailing defendant's detention status.

  • Prepares orders for instant drug screens.

  • Accepts, reviews and records filing of legal papers.

  • Answers questions concerning court records and files.

  • Input and/or prepare documentation for input into computer case management system.

  • Assists the public in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Administers oaths to witnesses.

  • Accepts, marks, and maintains evidence and exhibits introduced in court.

  • Records case disposition, court orders and arrangements for payment of court fees.

  • Prepares audits on all cases with delinquent restitution.

  • May collect court fees or fines and records amounts due.

  • Reviews /prepares judgment and sentences on disposed cases.

  • May train, assign, monitor and review the work of new employees.

  • Dependent upon assignment, may be required to travel to various office locations.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the Clerk of the Circuit Court/City of Jacksonville's competencies.

  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of clerical practices and procedures used in a court of law.

  • Knowledge of the laws and statutes, rules, regulations and procedures governing the acceptance, custody, filing and recording of legal documents, exhibits and evidence.

  • Knowledge of legal terminology as it relates to court records and files.

  • Knowledge of sentencing guidelines, - probation procedures and guidelines.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations as they relate to court activities.

  • A three-year (3) combination of education and/or experience in legal or court related clerical support work.

  • Depending on assignment, ability to type at a rate of 40 words per minute.

LICENSING/ CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

  • Depending on assignment, a valid Class E Driver's license is required to be maintained during employment in this class.

  • May be required to furnish an automobile in operable condition for use in City business for which mileage compensation will be paid.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.

  • Depending upon assignment, the position may perform safety-sensitive functions and if so, is subject to pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville's Drug Free Workplace Policy (Directive 0401).
