Position Summary Information

General Summary

TheSecurity Guard/Officerperforms general patrol and access control duties in the safeguarding of Commission employees, and the general public. Protects buildings and grounds against damages from natural causes, abuse or misuse by the public, and violations by employees. The Security Guard/Officer operates the security control communications center and serves as radio dispatcher and monitors the Commission’s central intrusion-fire alarm computer station. Also serves as the pool vehicle coordinator for the WSSC Water Support Center and all associated record-keeping.

Essential Functions

  • Patrols Commission buildings and/or property to detect and prevent fire, theft, damage, accidents, trespassing, sabotage, and other related dangerous situations; Investigates calls and complaints involving the reporting of fires, theft, accidents, and hazards

  • Monitors and evaluates Commission-wide central alarm system for fire, intrusion, and duress alarms, contacts responsible local police/fire/emergency agency or WSSC Water employee(s) as required for response

  • Monitors Commission wide CCTV system evaluates and contacts responsible local police/fire/emergency agency or WSSC Water employee(s) as required for response

  • Operates Security’s radio base station by dispatching emergency and regular calls for service to patrol officers or other proper authorities

  • Coordinates interaction of WSSC Water Police Officers in the field with Officers from other police agencies

  • Summons emergency apparatus, uses fire extinguisher, applies first aide or CPR , and alerts occupants of hazardous conditions

  • Coordinates via two-way radio, radio base station and telephone with WSSC Water Safety Division, designated WSSC Water floor monitors, and outside agencies during emergency evacuation events

  • Receives and notifies proper authorities for all Commission wide 911 and emergency elevator calls

  • Enters all calls for service in Perceptive tracking software

  • Checks passes and/or credentials of persons seeking to enter Commission property and denies entrance to the unauthorized

  • Dispenses information and enforces Commission rules, regulations and policies

  • Maintains a daily log of activities and other security matters

  • Controls and issues pool vehicles assigned to the RGH Building and completes all administrative tasks associated with being a pool coordinator

  • Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business

Other Functions

  • Receives and logs procurement bid documents

  • Receives, scans, and logs permit services applications

  • Directs persons with complaints and inquiries to the proper authorities

  • Patrols grounds as required by the Security Officer general orders

  • Maintains all work areas in a safe and sanitary condition

  • Instructs the public on proper use of night depositories

  • Directs/controls pedestrian and vehicular traffic and issues traffic citations when required

  • Inspects walkways and other public areas, eliminating hazardous conditions when noted

  • Performs other related duties as required

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Thorough working knowledge of security and safety measures

  • Ability to gain knowledge of and apply WSSC Water policies and regulations and operational procedures conducted at various facilities

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions

  • Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and efficiently with employees and the general public

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and perform effectively under emergency conditions

  • Ability to operate a computer aided central alarm station

  • Ability to obtain and maintain MILES / NCIC access certification

  • Ability to effectively document shift and/or incident activity

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Ability to operate several different communications devices including two-way radios, radio base station and telephones simultaneously during emergency and non-emergency events

  • Ability to operate computers and utilize key security software including access control and visitor management, close-circuit television monitors and analytics, security alarms, and related systems

Minimum Education, Experience Requirements

  • High School diploma (or equivalent)

  • 1+ year physical security experience (i.e., guard, patrol)

  • 1+ year radio dispatch experience

Additional Requirements

  • Must pass a Level I law enforcement-level background investigation

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license with no more than 4 points and the ability to obtain a WSSC Water driver’s permit within 90 days of hire or transfer

  • Employees must be able to work mandated overtime as part of a 24-hour 7-day operation

  • Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work

Salary$18.80 - $31.95 per hour
