Craven County Government Deputy Register of Deeds - Temp/Part-time (10875) in New Bern, North Carolina
Primary Purpose Performs administrative and document processing work of a legal nature in the Office of the Register of Deeds. This position will assist during busy times when other staff members are unavailable.
Essential Functions Performs specialized work of a very technical and legal nature. Receives deeds, deeds of trust, powers of attorney, assignments, agreements, notices, and many other types of documents; records and indexes documents according to the North Carolina Minimum Indexing Standards and General Statutes after verifying statutory prerequisites, showing great attention to detail; working directly with attorneys, paralegals, appraisers, surveyors, lending institutions, and the general public. Issues marriage licenses according to North Carolina statutes; swears in Notaries Public, issues certified copies of birth, death, marriage, and land records while following current legislation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- General knowledge of the functions and procedures of the office of the Register of Deeds.
- General knowledge of the purpose and composition of a variety of documents and of terms used in the office.
- Working knowledge of laws relating to matters under the jurisdiction of the Register of Deeds.
- Skill in typing rapidly and accurately and operating computers and office machines effectively.
- Ability to work accurately with words and figures and to write legibly.
- Ability to follow established procedures and specific instructions.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public; and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
- Must be willing and able to study and learn the many North Carolina statutes and rules as they relate to the Register of Deeds office.
- Must be very detail oriented.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school with a minimum of two years' experience working in the customer service arena or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be proficient in word processing with good general computer knowledge.
- Knowledge of real estate documents a plus.
- Spanish a plus.
- Additional Information Aid public in research using both computer and paper records.
- Performs related duties as required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life support functions of climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze figures and data, operate a computer terminal and do extensive reading and research.
