Job Description

The Digital News Design group is looking for a Staff Editor attached to the Well desk, to join our award-winning team of designers and multimedia editors in the newsroom in New York. You will work with art directors, designers, photo editors, reporters, word editors, producers, and others at The Times. You will contribute to the visuals within the Well report: including news, enterprise, service pieces, quizzes, interactives, videos and other contexts and formats on our digital platforms. The core of your work will involve assigning and consideration of the use of static illustrations and animated art.

You have a portfolio demonstrating digital and mobile-focused art direction work, an understanding of storytelling techniques, and experience with editorial assignments. You will be a quick learner with creative ideas and can work collaboratively.

You will report to an Assistant Editor on the Digital News Desk.

The schedule is a 4-day week, excluding weekends.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

What You’ll Do:

  • Assign and edit illustrations and other visual assets to produce visual stories with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom.

  • Exercise news judgment across the report: commission art that informs our readers, and adds value to stories, while being attentive to sensitive or complex issues in daily and ongoing news stories.

  • Maintain the highest standard of illustration presentation for feature, news and enterprise stories.

  • Collaborate productively with colleagues in editing and design.

  • Demonstrate editorial judgment, working with Times editors and legal department for all vetting, copyright, legal and ethical questions.

Basic Requirements:

  • 5+ years experience in a newsroom or equivalent.

  • Experience assigning and shaping illustration and other art and directing its use within the report.

  • A strong portfolio of work demonstrating a range of illustration commissions and their role in editorial pieces.

  • Expertise with digital design/editing tools and programs, including the Adobe Creative suite.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news production environment.

  • Strong organizational, communication and collaboration skills,

  • A passion for the topics Well covers.

  • Commitment to the mission of The New York Times.

  • Enthusiasm for commissioning art and producing high quality visual journalism

  • Experience making decisions under deadlines and a high-pressure newsroom environment

  • Experience working collaboratively with members of a multidisciplinary team

  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule

The hourly base pay pay for this role is between $61.38 and $61.54.
