Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for a Waterworks Operator in our Water Production Division. This person performs duties associated with operating a water treatment plant. Maintains and operates equipment to filter and maintain water pressure. Performs various tests to ensure the safety of water.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Operates the plant by conducting various chemical tests and making adjustments, performing maintenance on plant and equipment, maintains log and equipment records, monitoring personnel entering or leaving the plant, and resolving problems.

  • Monitors filtration by adjusting filters to match water coming into the plant, monitoring for turbidity and head loss, and running them through a cleaning process.

  • Monitors water pressure by adjusting pumps to keep pressure within specifications while maintaining the proper levels in tanks.

Education/Experience

Waterworks Operator I

High school diploma or GED. Work requires broad knowledge in a general technical and professional field.

No experience required.

Must pass Waterworks Operator Class IV License examination within two years of hire and must pass Waterworks Operator Class III License examination within two years following receipt of a Waterworks Operator Class IV License.

Waterworks Operator II

High school diploma or GED. Work requires broad knowledge in a general technical and professional field.

One year experience required.

Must hold a Waterworks Operator Class III License. Must pass Class II operator's examination within two years of being classified as a Waterworks Operator II.

Waterworks Operator III

High school diploma or GED. Work requires broad knowledge in a general technical and professional field.

Two years' experience.

Must hold a Waterworks Operator II License. Must pass Class I Operator's examination within two years of being classified as a Waterworks Operator III.

Waterworks Operator IV

High school diploma or GED. Work requires broad knowledge in a general technical and professional field.

Three years' experience

Must hold a Waterworks Operator Class I License.

Additional Information & Requirements

Must hold a Waterworks Operator Class I License.

Work Hours: 3 days on 3 days off; 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (hours subject to change)

Work Location: 6040 Waterworks Road, Norfolk, Virginia 23502 ; You may be required to work at 3719 Parker Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia 23508 as needed.

This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.

This position is designated as an 'Essential' position and you may be required to work extended, rotating, after hours, weekends, and/or holiday shifts in response to emergencies and severe weather.**

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
