Newell Brands Manager, Environmental Health & Safety in Reedsburg, Wisconsin

POSITION SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, directs the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive environmental, safety and health programs for the plant including; programs, policies and procedures that are compliant and promote continuous improvement. Provides the leadership, direction and support necessary to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations and standards to meet or exceed relevant internal and external safety & environmental standards in a manner consistent with sound business practice. Requires the ability to develop and maintain relationships with all levels within and outside the organization from corporate, regional and plant management to supervisors and hourly employees in the production areas.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leader of the company’s Behavior Based Safety (BBS) program; ensuring sustainment and ongoing improvements.

  • Ensure safe working techniques and enforce safety policies, guidelines, and procedures as set out by the Company.

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate EH&S programs; providing technical support, interfacing with regulatory agencies, and ensuring adequate recordkeeping.

  • Coordinate, administer, and ensure plant EH&S programs are in line with corporate safety policies and practices.

  • Develop and implement safety features to the working environment that will reduce employees’ exposure to chemical, physical and/or biological work hazards.

  • Responsible for assisting in the identification of possible losses; evaluating the risk in such loss exposure; developing and implementing a plan to correct or prevent a loss and audit the plan to ensure its effectiveness.

  • Investigate accidents, injuries, incidents and occupational diseases to determine causes and preventive measures to include; reporting defined by local, state and federal regulatory laws and company policies.

  • Assure that all employees, visitors and contractors are properly trained in job hazards and safe work practices as defined by company policies.

  • Develop, lead, and administer plant EH&S training programs to include; maintaining accurate record keeping as defined by local, state and federal regulatory laws and company policies.

  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) on controlled products used on the plant site to include; reviewing and approving all requested controlled products for use.

  • Conduct job hazard analyses for any new processes or existing processes that post concern.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • All job functions to be completed in compliance with federal, state, local regulations, company guidelines and policies.

REQUIREMENTS / EDUCATION LEVEL:

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational or Environmental, Health &Safety or related area of study.

Preferred: CSP or CIH designation

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Required: Minimum of 5 years EH&S experience in plastics manufacturing or related production environment. Internship and/or co-op will be considered as work experience.

Required: Requires thorough knowledge of all applicable laws, regulations, safe work practices, and accident prevention programs. Basic understanding of applicable state workers’ compensation regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:

  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines concerning health & safety.

  • Knowledge of OSHA Injury & Illness recordkeeping and reporting requirements.

  • Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation Law, and return-to-work policy.

  • Strong verbal and writing skills are essential for communication with various levels within corporate and site hierarchies.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects/efforts concurrently is essential.

  • Ability to develop and present business case(s) for program initiatives.

  • Strong planning skills, and ability to develop and implement work plans that meet corporate and site goals.

  • Ability to manage contractual matters and consultant work efforts.

  • Ability to write concise analyses of alternatives, present the results of deliberation in a concise fashion, and develop consensus within a group of varying disciplines.

  • Strong computer skills; e.g., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook (additional software programs will also be utilized).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Ability to stand/walk up to 50% of the shift.

  • Lift up to 25 pounds.

  • Must be able to frequently bend and twist and have unrestricted use of upper extremities.
