City of Sweetwater Firefighter EMT - Basic in Sweetwater, Texas

Description

The work is performed under the direction of a commanding officer, but the individual must be able to take initiative and exercise independent judgment in emergency situations. This position has no supervisory responsibilities, however may require giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or members of the public during emergency operations.

Examples of Duties
  • The following are an overview of the primary duties and general responsibilities for this position and shall not be considered an all-inclusive list.
  • Responds to alarms as a member of a firefighting company; performs variety of firefighting functions involving technical skills.
  • Responds as a member of a medical team to bring quality medical care to citizens of the community and surrounding area.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance/Improvement activities as assigned.
  • Participates in daily training exercises and classroom lectures.
  • Completes shift inspections, work projects and assigned duties in a timely manner.
  • Conducts demonstrations, tours and public speeches on fire safety, fire prevention, CPR, fire extinguishers, first aid and other subjects to the public.
  • Cooperates with surrounding communities in firefighting and rescue efforts.
  • Follow department rules and regulations.
  • Responsible for cleanliness of station and maintenance of apparatus, tools, equipment and all other Fire Department property.
  • Accomplish such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications
  • Shall hold at least TCFP Basic Firefighter Certification or be able to obtain within one (1) year of employment and maintain such certification.
  • Shall maintain a Texas DSHS Emergency Medical Technician/Basic (EMT-B) certification or be able to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  • Shall hold a valid Texas Class B Driver's License or higher or be able to obtain such a license.
Knowledge
  • Effective communication, oral and written, with supervisors, peers and public.
  • Understanding and following rules and regulations and standard operating procedures.
  • Read, write, and basic math.
  • Knowledge of national, state and local laws and fire/safety codes.
  • Skilled in report writing, driving, and use of computer, telephone, two-way radio, copy machine, fax machine.
  • Knowledge of fire protection systems, water supply, building construction, fire and rescue operations, disaster control and extinguishment of combustible and flammable materials.
  • Skills in firefighting, EMT, and public relations.
